Personal car or public transport? How can we reduce pollution in Iasi?

Road traffic is one of the main sources of pollution in the city of Iași. The growing number of cars on the roads contributes to higher carbon dioxide emissions, poorer air quality, and increased traffic congestion. Every day, thousands of people use their personal cars for short trips, leading to traffic jams, higher fuel consumption, and increased noise pollution. In this context, adopting sustainable urban mobility has become essential for protecting the environment and improving the quality of life.

The impact of traffic on the environment is significant. Motor vehicles emit greenhouse gases and fine particulate matter that reduce air quality. During rush hours, traffic congestion leads to higher fuel consumption and, consequently, increased emissions. At the same time, heavy traffic occupies public space, reduces road safety, and negatively affects public health. Reducing the number of cars on the roads can help minimize these negative effects.

One of the most effective solutions is using public transport. Buses and trams can carry a large number of passengers, reducing the number of private vehicles in traffic. Choosing public transport instead of a personal car means lower emissions, reduced fuel consumption, and a more efficient use of road infrastructure. Moreover, investing in modern public transport systems and expanding transport networks can encourage more people to leave their cars at home.

Cycling is another environmentally friendly alternative. For short and medium-distance trips, bicycles produce no polluting emissions and help reduce traffic congestion. In addition, cycling offers important health benefits by encouraging regular physical activity. Developing bicycle lanes and creating safe infrastructure for cyclists can make this mode of transport more attractive to the city’s residents.

Walking is equally important. For trips of just a few hundred meters or even one or two kilometers, walking is a simple, free, and environmentally friendly solution. Besides reducing emissions, it promotes a healthy lifestyle and helps decrease traffic congestion. Cities that provide modern sidewalks, green spaces, and pedestrian areas encourage more people to choose walking as their preferred means of transportation.

A successful European example is Copenhagen, Denmark. The city has consistently invested in bicycle lanes, modern public transport, and pedestrian-friendly areas. Today, a large proportion of Copenhagen’s residents choose bicycles for their daily commute, significantly reducing road traffic, carbon dioxide emissions, and air pollution. Copenhagen demonstrates that investing in sustainable urban mobility can transform a city into a cleaner, safer, and more livable place for its residents.

Reducing pollution does not depend only on public authorities but also on the choices made by every citizen. Using public transport, cycling, or walking for daily trips are important steps toward creating a cleaner and healthier city.

Every journey made without a personal car contributes to reducing pollution.
